According
to WHO, in 2014, 54% of the human race lived in cities. They expect
this number to rise by between 1.44% and 1.84% each year over the
next 15 years. That means by 2030, there will be at least 71% of the
world's population living in cities:
Will
there be a future demand for town planning?
You
see, the real problem with this is that most of this growth will
occur in existing urban developments rather than new cities. In other
words, our existing towns will turn into cities and our cities into
mega-cities. This means that urban structures and infrastructures not
designed for large numbers of people will have to be re-jigged to
accommodate them and it will have to happen whilst the towns and
cities continue to operate. To see the planning issues that that
entails you only need to look at London and Mumbai
Personally,
I would have said that it sounds like an exciting time to be a town
planning graduate
