However,
whether you actually feel afraid or not is irrelevant. The
Subconscious mind is still running programmed responses that you
haven't dealt with. The Subconscious mind is very quick and if it has
a response prepared for a particular event, it will act before your
Conscious mind has a chance to decide. To change that, you must
direct the Subconscious mind to a new response. Examples are positive
thinking, visualisation and spoken affirmations. My favourite
approach is Havi Brooks' idea of just sitting down and talking with
your "fear" -

like it because it gets to the very core of the interplay between the
Conscious and Subconscious minds. The Subconscious mind is there to
act to protect you but it isn't there to decide how to protect you.
So it will make a response that has worked in the past regardless of
whether it's still working now. That decision process is the job of
the Conscious mind.
